CANTON A once-in-a-hundred-years celebration of the NFL will not occur in Canton thisyear.
Canton City officials and the Centennial Celebration Host Committee announced Thursday that they are postponing the planned NFL Centennial Celebration out of caution for the public’s safety and to adhere to state health protocols regarding the coronavirus.
The celebration was to mark the 100th anniversary of the professional football league —founded Sept. 17 in Canton — with a series of events between Sept. 16 and 19. The scheduled events included a gala where some Centennial Slate members would be enshrined, the dedication of Canton’s $12.3 million Centennial Plaza and musical performances in TomBenson Hall of Fame Stadium.
Every person who played an NFL game was invited to the celebration, according to past reports.
